Suffolk County Legislator - 11th District

Republican, Libertarian

Steven J. Flotteron (Incumbent)

Background:

REPUBLICAN

Flotteron, 57, of Brightwaters, is running on the Republican and the Libertarian Party lines. The incumbent is running for his second term.

Policies:
  • Flotteron said the overriding issue facing the county is the “fiscal stress” on county finances led by “total mismanagement” by the county executive. His solution: “We have to say no to some things.” And examine expenses to find a way to do things “cheaper.”
  • He’s also focused on gang violence and the opioid epidemic.
  • He wants the county to find creative ways to fund law-enforcement priorities, such as applying for federal grants, and working with federal immigration and customs services on local policing issues.

Conservative

Joan Manahan

Background:

CONSERVATIVE

Manahan, 88, lives in Brightwaters and entered the race because she objected to the prospect of the Conservative Party’s endorsement of her Democratic rival, who she defeated in the Conservative primary. Manahan, a travel agent, spent 32 years working for Grumman.

Policies:
  • Her platform calls for reducing the county budget by 1 percent. “You’d be amazed how much you’d save,” she said.
  • She wants to abolish the Suffolk Community Resources to Assist Undocumented Immigrants because the recipients are “against the law and they’re getting money … They should be sent back to their countries where they came from.”

Policies:
  • He wants to combat the influence of MS-13 and gangs by not only arresting gang leaders and members, but by educating young students who are potential recruits.
  • McDermott said he’s also running to get “through-the-roof” taxes under control in the district and said he believes “current officials in this district don’t hold themselves accountable.”
  • McDermott is also interested in addressing water quality issues.
