Smithtown Town Council Member

Democratic

Richard Guttman

Background:

DEMOCRATIC

Guttman, 54, is running on the Democratic line. He is a lawyer in private practice in Kings Park seeking his first term in elected office.

Policies:
  • Guttman said he would work to turn Kings Park and other Smithtown hamlets into “consumer-friendly” destinations by focusing on sewers, parking and traffic safety.
  • Town government is too friendly to developers and should weigh residents’ concerns more heavily, he said. “People from the town don’t feel like local government is listening to them,” he said.
  • Traffic and pedestrian safety are priorities and should be considered as part of any project review, he said. Drivers are using residential roads “as a shortcut to get to the Expressway, and speeding,” he said.

Lisa M. Inzerillo (Incumbent)

REPUBLICAN

Inzerillo, 55, is running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence party lines. She is seeking her second term on the council and previously worked for the health care system now called Northwell Health.

Policies:
  • Inzerillo, the council’s liaison to the animal shelter, said a “complete renovation and rejuvenation” finished last year has turned the shelter into one of the best on Long Island. The town is seeking grants to help construction of a trap, neuter and release facility for cats.
  • She said she has worked to improve the town’s website, social media and the town’s own app. Eventually, residents will be able to request services like snowplowing through the app, she said.
  • She said she pushed for a 2018 law restricting where vape shops can open in the town, and is seeking further restrictions.

Thomas Lohmann (Incumbent)

Lohmann, 62, is running on the Republican, Independence and Conservative party lines. He is seeking his first full four-year term after a career in law enforcement. He was appointed to the council in January 2018 and won a November 2018 election to finish the unexpired council term of Supervisor Edward Wehrheim.

Policies:
  • Lohmann said he pushed for Smithtown to hire an outside consultant to help write the town’s comprehensive plan after a draft plan languished.
  • As Parks liaison, he is overseeing the rebuild of Flynn Memorial Park, whose softball fields he said will be among the region’s finest.
  • He said he works full time now on council business, and will continue to do so if re-elected. “We’re a long way away from our legislators and elected officials working part time,” he said.

Libertarian

Patricia A. Shirley

Shirley, 43, is running on the Libertarian line and is seeking her first term. She is chief executive of Shirley Academy, a school that trains people to get certification in medical coding.

Policies:
  • Government needs to be more receptive to small business owners and entrepreneurs, Shirley said. “I’ve seen business after business close down.”
  • She would expand the town’s school-age child care program, adding pre-K and bridge programs to give “real world experience” to high school students.
  • She would expand preventive screenings and other public health initiatives that she said are especially important for communities like Smithtown with a high population of senior citizens.
